CARAVAGGIO
Caravaggio, born in 1571 in Caravaggio, Italy, is one of the most influential and controversial painters of the Renaissance. He adopted the name of his hometown, Caravaggio, and is known for his revolutionary, highly realistic, dramatic light style (tenebrism).
Caravaggio was known for his violent temper and numerous altercations. In 1606, an argument at a tennis match in Rome escalated into a brawl in which Caravaggio killed a young man from a good family. This led him to flee Rome to escape justice and seek refuge in Naples, then Malta and Sicily. In Malta, he was even admitted to the Order of the Knights of Malta, but his turbulent temperament soon led to his expulsion from the Order. He continued to paint while constantly on the run, which inspired some of his works.
He is known for works such as :
. The Arrest of Christ
. Judith & Holophernes
